Do you suffer from sleep apnea or have a family member or friend who suffers from it? If so, you are encouraged to attend this support group meeting on Monday, August 2 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Parrish Healthcare Center at Port St. John, 5005 Port St. John Parkway, (east of the I-95 Port St. John exit – see map). The meetings are held in the Conference Center by the south entrance (near the sleep lab). This is a free community service. Please call 321-268-6408 to register.

At the August A.W.A.K.E. Support Group meeting you will learn about healthy eating from Board-Certified Geriatrician Pamela Tronetti, DO, AGSF, medical director of the Parrish Senior Consultation Center and the future Parrish Health Village.

The most frequent question in the sleep lab is, “How much sleep do I need?” Decades or even centuries ago, people routinely slept eight to nine hours a night. It’s clear that times have changed. In a world of Blackberries, the Internet, a declining economy, and ever-increasing stress, there simply aren’t enough hours in the day for sleep. However, the direct evidence for this is questionable. Our distant ancestors slept on rocks, dirt, unheated caves or trees. Variations in temperature went far outside our comfort zone, and insects, rain, snow, noises, hunger, untreated pain and predation by “lions, tigers and bears” — not to mention other humans — would have disturbed sleep far beyond what most of us experience in the 21st century. So what’s the answer? Presented by Neurologist Sachin Shenoy, MD.

At every A.W.A.K.E. Support Group meeting you’ll have the opportunity to see newer model CPAP machines and masks and receive a free mask fitting if you’d like. A.W.A.K.E. Support Group is a free community service. Please call 321-268-6408 to register. A.W.A.K.E. meetings are held the first Monday each month.
