The AWAKE Support Group will be discussing surgical treatment for sleep apnea during its meeting from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 29, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Education Rooms 2, 3 and 4.

Dr. Scott Keith of Upper Cumberland Otolaryngology will be this month’s speaker. Keith received his medical degree from the University of Iowa and completed his general surgery residency at Mt. Carmel Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, and his otolaryngology residency at The Ohio State University. He is board certified in otolaryngology.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, sleep apnea may affect between 20-40 percent of the adult snoring population. Untreated sleep apnea can be harmful to your health, and new surgical treatments may be able to provide relief.

Sponsored by the Sleep Center at Cookeville Regional, the AWAKE support group is for people in the Upper Cumberland area with sleep disorders, and anyone with a sleep disorder is encouraged to attend. Family members are also welcome to attend. People who have CPAP/BIPAP equipment are also urged to bring it in for a free service check-up at the meeting.

This month’s meeting is supported by Respiratory at Home.

The AWAKE support group meets periodically throughout the year. For more information, contact Christopher Clinton at The Sleep Center at 783-2753.
