GE and Intel have agreed to merge their home health assets to form a new 50/50 joint venture. The as yet unnamed new company, which will focus on telehealth and independent living, will be made up of GE Healthcare’s Home Health division and Intel’s Digital Health Group. The new company will focus on three segments: chronic disease management, independent living and assistive technologies. Some of the relevant assets moving to the new JV include Intel Health Guide, Intel Reader and GE Healthcare’s QuietCare. The new company plans to develop and market new products, services and technologies, too. Read the rest of this entry

Ambulatory BP studies indicate that even small increases in BP, particularly nighttime BP levels, are associated with significant increases in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

Accordingly, sleep-related diseases that induce increases in BP would be anticipated to substantially affect cardiovascular risk. Both sleep deprivation and insomnia have been linked to increases in incidence and prevalence of hypertension.

Likewise, sleep disruption attributable to restless legs syndrome increases the likelihood of having hypertension. Read the rest of this entry

In a recently completed research study the researchers examined that among children undergoing adenotonsillectomy for obstructive sleep apnea, what are the responsible factors that promote incomplete resolution of obstructive sleep apnea.

In quest to this exploration researchers  attempted to assess the efficacy of surgical removal of the tonsils and adenoids (adenotonsillectomy [AT]) in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children, and to delineate factors associated with persistent OSA, a retrospective review of pre- and postsurgery polysomnograms (PSG) through a research study which was conducted at eight facilities in the US and Europe. The Cuyahoga County New Product Development and Entrepreneurship Loan Fund awarded Cleveland Medical Devices Inc. $60,000 to step up commercialization of the company’s SleepView device for sleep apnea screening at home.

CleveMed has a lineup of wireless diagnostic sleep systems, including SleepView, which is the smallest and lightest home sleep monitor with an American Academy of Sleep Medicine-recommended Type 3 channel set.

“This is all about, how do we start to commercialize this more?” said CleveMed chairman Bob Schmidt. “We want to expand from the hundreds of places [where the device is used] now to thousands of places.”

CleveMed develops innovative biomedical signal processing and instrumentation devices for sleep and movement disorders, like Parkinson’s.

New Low Pressure Sensor for Sleep Apnea Devices

[Press Release]-/-Servoflo Corporation of Lexington, Massachusetts is pleased to announce the MS5701 low pressure sensor with an I2C or SPI digital interface. Available in either differential or gauge models, the MS5701 can measure as low as ±2.5″ H2O up to ±10″ H2O in a differential version. The gauge model comes in ranges from +2″ H2O to +20″ H2O.

Using the latest in MEMS technology, the MS5701 has a low supply voltage of 1.8 to 3.6V with a 1 mA power consumption. Furthermore, the MS5701 pressure sensor has a high resolution of 0.0004″ of water (0.001 mbar) and a fast conversion of 0.54 milliseconds. A 24-bit pressure and temperature output allows for integration to any microcontroller. The I2C or SPI interface communicates up to 20 MHz. Read the rest of this entry
