Restless Leg Syndrome Could Be a Side Effect
Restless leg syndrome is often a symptom of conditions or diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, but could also be side effects associated with certain medications. Below is a list of diseases and conditions associated with symptoms like restless leg syndrome, as well as a list of medications related to similar side effects.
We are not medical professionals, and these may not be comprehensive lists. Please contact your doctor if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms or side effects, or similar health issues.
Restless leg syndrome is discomfort in the legs and the strong or irresistible urge to move them. Movement temporarily relieves the discomfort. Restless leg syndrome is often worse at night and can cause sleep deprivation.
Restless Leg Syndrome Could Be A Symptom Of:
Iron Deficiency does not have to be so low as to cause anemia in order to cause restless leg syndrome. It is believed that low iron in brain cells causes signals to get crossed in the central nervous system. Other symptoms of iron deficiency can include weakness, irritability, fatigue, heartburn, abdominal pains, heart palpitations, tingling in the extremities, and soreness in the mouth.
Kidney Failure: Kidney disease can cause iron deficiency leading to restless leg syndrome. Most patients whose kidney disease is so advanced that they require dialysis have anemia. Other symptoms of kidney failure can include weakness, lethargy, metabolic acidosis, dangerous heart rhythm disturbances, and inflammation of internal organs.
Parkinson’s disease is a brain disorder in which the cells that produce dopamine die off. Dopamine is necessary for smooth and coordinated movements. Restless leg syndrome is common in peoples with Parkinson’s and may appear before other noticeable symptoms.
Celiac disease is a digestive disorder in which the consumption of gluten prompts a toxic immune response in the body. Celiac disease can cause iron deficiency and the correlation between restless leg syndrome and celiac disease is so high that it is now recommended that all patients with restless leg syndrome be screened for the disease.
Restless Leg Syndrome May Be A Side Effect Associated With:
Benadryl is a sleep-inducing antihistamine. While it does not cause restless leg syndrome it can trigger or worsen the symptoms in people who have it. Other side effects of Benadryl can include sleepiness, dizziness, lack of coordination, heartburn, chest mucus, dry mouth, and increased sensitivity to the sun.
Elavil is a tricyclic antidepressant. It is used to treat major depression and is sometimes prescribed off-label to treat post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), insomnia, and chronic pain. Side effects can include restless leg syndrome, suicidal thoughts, muscle stiffness weight gain, insomnia, and urinary retention.
Thorazine is an old antipsychotic that has been in use since the 1950’s. Side effects can include sedation, slurred speech, seizures, restless leg syndrome, twitching, tremors, drooling, unusual behavior and increased sensitivity to light.
Chantix is prescribed to help people stop smoking. One of the most serious side effects of Chantix is suicidal thoughts. Nervous system side effects of the drug can include restless leg syndrome, dizziness, amnesia, migraines, and psychomotor hyperactivity.
