GLOBAL Doctor’s Specialist Centre in Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, now offers its first Sleep Apnea Clinic offering sleep diagnostic testing with the Philips Alice 5 Diagnostic Sleep System, a fully-integrated sleep laboratory system. The launch of the clinic highlights Philips and Global Doctors’ commitment to improving the awareness of common sleep disorders, such as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) in Malaysia.Nearly 7% of the adult population or 1.9 million people in Malaysia are affected by Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).According to the findings of attitudinal study of Malaysians’ perceptions of their health and well-being, the Philips Index, suggested that 17% of Malaysians do not get enough sleep. The study results also revealed that their perceived lack of sleep negatively impacted on how they felt about their physihecal and mental health.

“The Philips Index results highlighted a need for increased education about common sleep disorders like OSA,” said Lee Weng Seong, country manager, Philips Malaysia. “Poor quality sleep can have a significant impact on a person’s health and well-being; it should be taken seriously and individuals with poor or disturbed sleep should visit a doctor for diagnosis.”

One reason for lack of quality sleep is OSA; a condition characterised by the repeated cessation of breathing during sleep. OSA not only negatively impacts a person’s overall quality of life and productivity, but as recent research has revealed, it can also potentially lead to serious health issues, increasing the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, daytime sleepiness, and other conditions.

The Global Doctors Sleep Apnea Clinic has been opened to help diagnose Malaysians who are unaware they suffer from sleep disorders like OSA, and to encourage the importance of early detection of OSA. It is estimated that 80 to 90% of sleep sufferers are unaware that they have a sleep-related condition.

The Philips Alice 5 Diagnostic Sleep System is a fully-integrated sleep laboratory system, which examines the respiratory system, and also, the patient’s brain activity and heart rate, offering a comprehensive sleep diagnostic exam. Other features include high quality electrocardiogram (ECG) with six channels and pulse transit time (PTT), along with real-time impedance display.
