Sleep apnea is a serious and dangerous disorder that can cause a wide variety of illness and dysfunction. CPAP is considered the Gold Standard of treatment for sleep apnea and the first line treatment for severe sleep apnea. For mild to moderate sleep apnea CPAP and Oral Appliances are considered to be the first lines of treatment. 

Numerous studies attest to the efficacy of Continuous Positive Airway Presssure (CPAP) for treating sleep apnea. Unfortunately, there are numerous articles relating to CPAP failure due to non-compliance. Eighty-one percent of hospital patients are at high risk for obstructive sleep apnea, a Loyola University Health System study has found.  

The findings suggest that hospitals should consider giving patients a five-minute screening test to identify those who are at high risk. 

Sleep specialist Dr. Sunita Kumar and colleagues administered an eight-question obstructive sleep apnea screening questionnaire known as STOP-BANG to patients during a single day at Loyola University Hospital.

Patients were excluded if they were on a breathing tube, on sedatives or had an altered mental status. 

Of the 195 patients surveyed, 157, or 80.5 percent, were at high risk for obstructive sleep apnea, meaning they answered “Yes” to at least three questions on the questionnaire.  Read the rest of this entry

Sleep Apnea CPAP Mask Improves Golf Scores

A study out of Morristown memorial hospital in New Jersey found a group of golfers that improved their golf game by up to three strokes. Granted, these golfers suffered from sleep apnea and were users of the C-PAP sleep apnea headhear, a continuous positive airway pressure mask that helps them sleep better. (Read More…  )

San Diego — As health officials continue to monitor the physical and monetary toll sleep disorders exact in the U.S., treating various conditions brought on by sleep problems has transformed snoozing into a sound business for a San Diego-based medical device manufacturer.

And the market of potential customers has yet to be fully realized, said officials at ResMed, a sleep apnea device maker with about 325 local employees.

SleepApneaDisorder/[Press Release]/-What is the best sleep apnea treatment? It is not CPAP, according to a recent study that showed 60% of patients abandon CPAP use. At least it is not the best treatment for the 60% of patients who abandoned it. This does not mean CPAP is not the most effective treatment, what it means is no matter how effective a treatment may be, it is a poor treatment if it is not used.
