However a relatively new and innovative in-home sleep study device is now available for qualified New York area patients to aid in the study of suspected sleep apnea.

The home sleep study equipment offered by Manhattan Snoring and Sleep Center is a state-of-the-art, portable wireless sleep study device created by Watermark Medical®, INC., a medical services company benefiting the sleep-disordered breathing market. New York City Manhattan A.W.A.K.E. Sleep Apnea Support Group is a free, open-to-the-public monthly meeting where New Yorkers affected by Sleep Apnea can gather with doctors and other experts in the field of Sleep Medicine, and have their questions asked and answered.

Chartered by the American Sleep Apnea Association, New York City Manhattan A.W.A.K.E. Sleep Apnea Support Group puts patients first – the physicians, manufacturers’ reps, equipment suppliers and others in attendance are there to help you navigate your treatment path.

David Morris, director of Magruder’s Sleep Medicine Center, is presenting a free educational program on the importance of sleep to overall health at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8, in the hospital’s conference center. Morris is Board Certified in internal medicine, pediatrics and sleep medicine.

There is a direct and proven link between sleep and your overall health. For example, conditions such as untreated, undiagnosed sleep apnea can increase a person’s risk for heart attacks and strokes. Sleep medicine is a simple way for people to optimize their health by addressing their sleep issues.

There will also be a tour of Magruder’s sleep center and light refreshments will be served.

If you are suffering from sleep apnea or have a family member or friend who suffers from it there is free community service and support at Port St. John.

You are encouraged to attend this support group meeting on Monday, December 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Parrish Healthcare Center at Port St. John, 5005 Port St. John Parkway, (east of the I-95 Port St. John exit – see map).

Active Healthcare, an award-winning industry leader in sleep apnea treatment, hosted a meeting of the Durham A.W.A.K.E. (Alert, Well and Keeping Energetic) support group Thursday, October 28 to share meaningful education and resources for managing this dangerous condition.

Participants learned how to deal with challenges in CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy, an effective method for treating obstructive sleep apnea. Presenters Julie Shannon and Angela Martinez, sleep specialists with Active Healthcare, were on hand to showcase the latest equipment and perform screenings for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in addition to testing attendee CPAP equipment on-site. New Zealand Sleep Specialists are calling for an urgent review of sleep services following the announcement that up to ten per cent of the adult population has sleep apnea, and the majority are undiagnosed.

“New Zealand Sleep Services are poorly resourced to deal with the current burden of disease. Most obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) remains unrecognised, which is of huge concern given the known consequences of untreated OSA”, says Dr Michael Hlavac, Sleep Specialist at Christchurch Hospital and Chair of the New Zealand branch of the Australasian Sleep Association.

The AWAKE Support Group will be discussing surgical treatment for sleep apnea during its meeting from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 29, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Education Rooms 2, 3 and 4.

Dr. Scott Keith of Upper Cumberland Otolaryngology will be this month’s speaker. Keith received his medical degree from the University of Iowa and completed his general surgery residency at Mt.
