When someone has sleep apnea, their breathing stops or becomes shallow while sleeping. In adults, apnea is considered significant when these pauses in breathing last 10 seconds or longer and occur more than five to 15 or more times an hour.

Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type and is caused by the inability to move enough air through the mouth and nose into the lungs because of complete or partial blockage in the upper airways during sleep. According to the World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM), sleep problems add up to a global epidemic that affects 45 percent of the world’s population. The statistic and demographic clearinghouse, “Statistic Brain,” verifies this staggering statistic and asserts that approximately 40 million Americans suffer from a chronic sleep disorder, such as insomnia, sleep apnea or narcolepsy (a brain’s inability to regulate sleep/wake cycles normally). According to a recently concluded research study published in the journal SLEEP  the researchers found that patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) taking phentermine and topiramate extended-release capsules achieved significant improvements in key measures of OSA and cardiovascular risk factors along with weight loss during the 28-week trial.

OSA is a chronic and potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing is abnormally shallow (“hypopnea”) or stops altogether (“apnea”) for at least 10 seconds. These repetitive events are associated with collapse of the upper airway during sleep, and may occur 5 to 30 or more times per hour. Demanding schedules and high stress levels compel almost 78% of the corporate employees to sleep less than 6 hours every day leading to variety of sleep disorders and other health problems.

The ASSOCHAM survey findings revealed that “Loss of sleep has wide ranging effects including daytime fatigue, physical discomfort, psychological stress, performance deterioration, low-pain threshold and increase absenteeism”.

How To Reduce Sleep Deprivation in Children

For years, you’ve been through the loss of an hour in the spring and the gain of an hour in the fall as part of daylight saving time. With the upcoming time change slated for 2 a.m. Sunday, March 11, adults may be used to it, but children, including teenagers, may not be.

According to a sleep specialist, “the spring’s loss of an hour is usually the one that causes the most sleeping havoc”.

However, parents can lessen the effects of potential sleep deprivation with a few simple steps, says Dr. Philip Alapat, medical director, Sleep Disorders Center, Harris County Hospital District, and assistant professor, Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Baylor College of Medicine.

The Center at Norwalk Hospital will be hosting its first Sleep Apnea Support Group for Children on Saturday, Nov. 12.  Parents and children are invited to attend the educational event.

Kass will address the group with a talk, “The Significance of Snoring at Any Age.”. In general, symptoms of sleep apnea in toddlers may include tantrums and irritability. As children get older, the lack of sleep may manifest itself as hyperactivity, acting out, poor grades in school, mood swings, and even a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

“In addition to the potential health issues associated with sleep apnea, we see children who suffer from fatigue and attention issues due to interruption in sleep,” said Kass.

The program is being offered as a public service and as part of A.W.A.K.E (Alert, Well, and Keeping Energetic) of the American Sleep Apnea Association.  A.W.A.K.E. is a health awareness program offered to those who suffer from sleep apnea, as well as their family, friends and anyone who is interested in learning more.

The Nov. 12 support group will include face painting and drawing activities for children.  Children are encouraged to bring their CPAP masks for a fitting by experienced sleep technicians.  CPAP users and family are being encouraged to share their tips for successful sleeping with CPAP.
