The Snoring Center,(SM) the nationally renowned Dallas-based clinic for the treatment of snoring and sleep apnea, has filed a federal lawsuit against a group of San Francisco businessmen accused of using fraudulently obtained proprietary information to establish and falsely market a competing medical practice, the “Sereno Center for Snoring Solutions”.

The lawsuit, filed today in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, includes claims that, in late 2008 and 2009, defendants Wade Zander, Jason Godfrey and Dr. Matthew Mingrone posed as potential investors and joint venture partner in The Snoring Center’s plans to expand beyond Dallas, Houston and Fort Worth.  Instead, the defendants allegedly obtained and used The Snoring Center’s confidential financial and clinical data and advertising strategies to open the Sereno Center in downtown San Francisco earlier this year. The College Station Sleep Center received national accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). The accreditation distinguishes College Station Sleep Center as meeting or exceeding national quality-of-care measures for sleep disorder treatment. As Americans get heavier and heavier, the incidence of obstructive sleep apnea increases, and results from two clinical studies presented at ANESTHESIOLOGY 2010 reinforce the need for physicians to screen for the disorder prior to surgery in order to appropriately manage the patient in the operating room.

“If patients with unidentified obstructive sleep apnea undergo surgery, they may have an increased chance of experiencing complications during and after surgery,” said Frances Chung, F.R.C.P.C., investigator on both studies and Professor, Department of Anesthesia, University Health Network, University of Toronto. “A growing amount of evidence suggests that obstructive sleep apnea is associated with heart and lung disease, diabetes mellitus and a higher rate of early death.” Read the rest of this entry

Common eye disorder called floppy eyelid syndrome is strongly linked with Obstructive Sleep Apnea, a new study finds.

“This is very significant,” says researchers at the Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.  “When doctors diagnose one condition in a patient they should also look for the other, in this case OSA.”

The study tracked 102 patients with floppy eyelid syndrome (FES) from 1995 through 2008. People with FES have rubbery-textured upper eyelids that may easily flip up during sleep, which can lead to irritated eyes and or discharge. Read the rest of this entry
